Fighter Aircraft Turbines To Extinguish Oil Well Fires

During the Gulf War, the Iraqi army torched more than 700 oil wells. To extinguish these massive simultaneous fires, Hungarian engineers developed a radical new approach. They modified tanks by removing the turret and retrofitted two Mig 21 aircraft reactors to the vehicle body. The jet blasts were used to propulse massive amounts of water at the well thus extinguishing the fire very quickly.
