Why Are Formula One Mercedes Called the Silver Arrows?

The origin of this nickname date back to 1934 when von Brauchitsch prepared for the maiden Mercedes race on the Nürburgring circuit. Discovering that the vehicle surpassed the regulation 1653 pounds, the driver and racing manager decided to strip off the original white paint, exposing the silver aluminum surface.

Von Brauchitsch won the race and thus was born the legend of the Silver Arrows.
