The True Cost of Higway Construction

The cost of building a highway is astronomical. On average in the US to construct a new 2-lane undivided road will cost taxpayers about $2-$3 million per mile in rural areas and about $3-5 million in urban areas.

To construct a new 4-lane highway costs a whopping $4-$6 million per mile in rural and suburban areas and $8-$10 million per mile in urban areas. Over 25% of the toll money goes to pay back interest on the loans needed for construction.
