The Oldest and Largest Known Meteorite Impact

The dome of Vredefort, situated in South Africa, is the result of a meteorite that crashed into Earth over 2 billion years ago. Easily observed on satellite images, it has a diameter of roughly 186 miles and is the oldest and largest evidence of a meteorite crash. According to leading scientists it had a considerable influence on the evolution of the planet.
