Why Do Some Dutch Cities Have Names Ending With ''Dam''?

The suffix "dam" is added to the name of many Dutch cities such as Amsterdam, Rotterdam, etc. The reason for this fact is that "dam" means "barricade" in English. These cities were enlarged by reclaiming land from the sea. To secure these gains, dams were constructed to protect them from flooding.
