The Raft of the Medusa - To Contemplate Before It's Too Late

The Raft of the Medusa, Gericault's famous painting, is doomed to disappear because of a pigment, black bitumen, used by the French painter Jean Louis Théodore Géricault. This pigment has never dried and has spread through the layers of paint. Many paintings of the same period contain some and will gradually darken to become very dark.
